Georges Braque, Violin and Palette (1909-10) I hardcore want a huge print of this for my house someday. Also here’s what my European Art History book says: Since the Renaissance, naturalistic illusionism had been a primary concern of painting, but Cubism confronted that tradition by asserting a new independence for the painted image.  Given the visual clues that Braque offers us in Violin and Palette, we conceptually understand, for example, that one of the images refers to a violin.  The image does not represent a particular violin as seen from a specific viewpoint.  Rather, the simultaneous viewpoints suggest the essence of a violin—those shapes, forms, and colors that define a violin as a distinct object, different from the music stand, sheet music, palette, or drapery.  In this process of analysis, seeing becomes both visual and conceptual; we perceive time together with space as a total experience, unlike the illusionistic tradition of painting, which fixes a viewpoint at a moment in time.
